Location: Baghdad South, Iraq.
Capabilities: 400kV and 132kV transmission lines and towers.
Timetable: Contract awarded in August 2006.
Status: Project completed in June 2007.
Small repairs to towers and transmission lines in Iraq are typically repaired by the Ministry of Electricity (MoE). The MoE attempted to repair these towers but severe sectarian violence made the job impossible.
A fresh approach was needed, and Symbion was called upon to provide it. Symbion dispatched an envoy to villages close to the towers and presented opportunities to local workers for general labor and security. We also provided humanitarian assistance. For instance, we refurbished a village well to provide clean drinking water and, in another village, we repaired a washing area near a village mosque.
This focus on cooperation proved critical to the success for this very dangerous assignment. Symbion repaired and restored 400kV transmission lines between Mussiab and Baghdad South, Baghdad South and Al Ameen, and Baghdad South and Qadissiya. We also repaired and restored a 132kV line between Dura and Qusayba as well as eight towers.
