The Millennium Challenge Corporation ("MCC") and the Government of Tanzania have entered into a Millennium Challenge Compact for Millennium Challenge Account assistance to help facilitate poverty reduction through economic growth in Tanzania.

Symbion formed a consortium with the French firm, Alstom, to accomplish this project. The project’s overall objective is to improve the reliability of the Tanzanian transmission and distribution system. The work will augment and rehabilitate the existing transmission and distribution system, thereby providing the Tanzanian people with employment opportunities and important skills. The Symbion-Alstom consortium will execute works in four phases.

Unique Challenges

The complexities of this project are many due to multi-sites spread over Tanzania and Zanzibar with multiple types of sites (Greenfield, Brownfield, extensions of existing substations and rehabilitation of existing substations). The project will require extensive logistical planning to accommodate aggressive project schedules as well as vendor delays and limited entry ports for substation construction. Material and resource shortages due to increased construction activities in Tanzania may also pose a challenge.

Overcoming Obstacles

A systematic approach based on previous experience and a careful selection process of sub-contractors and suppliers along with training will ensure a successful delivery of this project.
