Repair and Extend a Substation in Fallujah, Iraq

Previous

Location: Fallujah, Iraq.
Capabilities: Repair and extend existing substation.
Timetable: Contract awarded in July 2006.
Status: Energized August 2009.

A Damaging Fire

In service since 1983, the Fallujah substation, an Alstom 132kV/33kV/11kV Air Insulated Substation, suffered substantial fire damage in 2006. The fire occurred in the cable vault and rendered part of the substation, including one transformer and much of the switchgear, completely inoperable.

Symbion was called in to install a new transformer bay, replace an existing transformer with a new one, and refurbish another existing transformer. We were also contracted to install new 33kV, 11kV, and LVAC switchboards, with all associated electrical work.

A Cooperative Approach

Symbion brought together a team in cooperation with local people, leveraging local residents to do the repair work. This included the extensive training of the Fallujah-based personnel who did both the repair and reconstruction work.

All civil and structural work has been completed. All electrical equipment has been supplied by Alstom and is installed.
